“Green” Tile Grout Cleaner

I personally don’t like to clean tile grout or use harsh chemicals to clean.  The smells of the chemicals cause havoc with my breathing and heart.  I didn’t have this issue until I got older.  I saw this recipe on pinterest and decided to try it out.  I currently live in a foreign country and the cleaning habits of the hired staff and others that have lived in the apartment I currently live in are not up to par.

The apartment was clean when we moved in but didn’t look or feel clean.  All of the rooms have tile in them.  All the grout was filthy.  The kitchen floor is also tile and I don’t like to cook in a kitchen that looks or feels dirty.

I am thinking I am starting to become a little OCD when it comes to cleaning.  The staff comes in everyday although we have asked her to only come twice a week.  Every day is a little much when you feel you have to go behind and clean again.  That’s too much cleaning for me.  We have to provide the cleaning supplies for the housekeeper which is fine.  She does use them.  Before we bought cleaning supplies she would just use water to clean and then would come and use a dirty rag from someone else’s apartment to clean the floor.

Since, we have bought new cleaning supplies she is using them and using our rags which are cleaned after every use.  Before, I bought the cleaning supplies for maintenance I decided to clean the kitchen tile.  The tile is white with white grout.  The floor tiles are not very large and the tile on the walls is larger.  I didn’t have an issue with the walls just the floor.

I honestly didn’t think the floor would come clean like it did and am very pleased that it did.  It didn’t take very long to do either and my kitchen now looks so bright and clean.  I should have taken before and after photos.  I was truly amazed at how clean the floor tile is.  I still have other parts of the apartment to clean but it is hard to find one of the ingredients.  Baking soda is hard to find where I live.

Recipe

7 cups water

½ cup baking soda

1/3 cup lemon juice

¼ cup vinegar

I used hot water because of the grease build up that was on the floor.  I mixed the ingredients in a bottle and poured it on the grout.  I let it sit for a little bit.  Then I wiped the floor with a rag.  The filth was gone.  To speed things up a bit I used a scrub brush on the really bad areas.  When I was finished I just rinsed the filth down the drain.  Yes, we have drains in the floor in the kitchen and bathrooms.  You could actually hook a hose up to the faucet and wash or clean the entire bathroom and/or kitchen and use a squeegee to get the water off the floors.
